Ranch Covey Hill
Owners:
400 Rte 202, Havelock, QC
DESCRIPTION
Covey Hill Ranch was established in 2017, when Emmanuel retired from the construction industry. We are a purebred Black Angus operation that run about 90 calving cows. We focus on raising the highest quality genetics possible, with an important focus on maternal qualities, carcass traits, soundness, and phenotype. We heavily utilize embryos transfers in order to progress rapidly and effectively.
We hold an annual bull and select female sale alongside our partners Mac Angus Farms, the third week of February. We also enjoy showing at the Canadian Angus Gold Shows across the country.
Alongside our cattle operation, we also tap 21,000 trees in our sugar bush and sell maple syrup and maple production at the farm.
BOUTIQUE BON BOEUF
Owners: Chantal Agnew
122 rang Duncan St-Chrysostome, QC
DESCRIPTION
We raise 55 Angus cross cattle. Of the cows that we calve every year, a select portion of the female calves are raised as replacements, some are sold as baby beef and the rest are fattened as beef.
We have been using artificial insemination from the beginning, as did my father as of the 80’s. This allows us to choose the sire for every cow and ensure the genetic quality of the herd. We can select for certain traits such as docility, maternal milk and weight gain, as well as for meat tenderness.
The cattle have access to the outdoors at all times. From mid-spring to fall, the cows and their calves (baby beef) graze in pasture, and are fed quality forages and corn silage that we grow ourselves. The feeder cattle are fed a ration of quality forages and corn silage and are not supplemented with grain. The feed for all the animals does not contain any GMOs nor antibiotics.
Anglo Acres has been in the family for two generations. I bought the farm from my parents. We were conscious from the beginning of the importance of diversifying, so the idea of a farm store made sense. In 2015, Boutique Bon Boeuf was officially opened.
Tullochgorum farm
Owners: Steve & Loraine Lalonde
2890 Tullochgorum, Ormstown QC
DESCRIPTION
Steven Lalonde purchased this 80-acre farm and poultry operation from his father in 1985. In 1991, he and his wife, Loraine Lamb, formed a partnership, naming the farm for the road on which it is situated.
Looking to maximize profits per acre and make good use of a ready supply of chicken manure as fertilizer, the couple converted their acreage to organic production in the year 2000. A further 200 acres of rented land would be converted to organic production over the next several years.
The idea for growing organic popcorn began when Steve’s brother gave him a few cobs of white popcorn from his garden, and over time has evolved into a sideline business for the farm, occupying up to 15 acres per year in total, depending on demand. Presently, they grow three different varieties of popcorn; a white and a red variety, which are marketed under the labels “White Lightning” and “Midnight Special, and a yellow “mushroom pop” variety which is ideal for making caramel popcorn. Although the popcorn is available for purchase at the farm, most is sold through distributors, either in 650g stand-up pouches, designed by Loraine, or in bulk bags or re-usable pails.

ELLIOTT FARM - Presentation Friday night
Owners: Matthew Elliott
It was in 1829 that the first Elliots immigrated from Jedburgh, Scotland and settled in Howick, QC.
In 1874, the Elliot family purchased the neighbouring farm to where they originally settled, which eventually became the home farm over the years.
While milking Ayrshires, a dairy cattle breed that originates from Scotland, was part of the Elliots agricultural activities for many years, it was in the mid 1960’s that Ross Elliot, the fourth generation farmer, started into egg production.
Ross was a graduate of Macdonald College Diploma of Agriculture class of 1955. While he milked cows and produced eggs simultaneously for a period of time, it was in 1966 that Ross decided to get rid of the cows and build a hen house to house 3000 laying hens, to continue his agricultural endeavour that was egg production.
Gregory is the fifth generation of Elliot’s to farm in Howick. He graduated from Macdonald College in 1979 with a Diploma in Agriculture. Later, in 1987, he bought and took over the farm from his father Ross. He maintained and grew the farm to what it is today.
Matthew, the sixth generation, graduated with a Diploma in Farm Management and Technology from Macdonald College in 2019. In the fall of 2019, we broke ground on our new laying hen barn project. It was completed and housed the first birds in March of 2020. The new facility can house approximately 22,000 hens.
To this day, the farm has around 15,000 hens and crops nearly 400 acres of corn, IP soybeans and wheat.
